Alex Scaffo, a former New Jersey Army National Guardsman and HillVets fellow, has joined the NGAUS staff this week.

He will be working on veterans’ issues for the NGAUS Government Affairs team, along with other duties, during his six-month stint at the National Guard Memorial, the association’s headquarters in Washington, D.C.

“I am eager to continue serving and aim to make the largest difference I can within the veteran community,” said Scaffo. “With NGAUS, I hope to gain a better understanding of the procedural aspects of what it takes to get meaningful legislation passed and take that to future endeavors,” he continued.

Founded in 2013, “HillVets is a community of Veterans, Service members and their supporters interested in governance, international affairs, policy, advocacy, and politics,” according to its website.

HillVets fellowships are usually designed to place veterans in congressional offices, but a special partnership was created between NGAUS and HillVets to allow Scaffo to work with the association and its members.

“We are thrilled to welcome our very first HillVets fellow to the NGAUS Government Affairs team,” said Julian Plamann, the deputy director of government affairs. “Veterans bring a much-needed voice to defense policy with their operational experience, leadership under pressure, and deep understanding of the real-world impact. Alex is one of us, and we look forward to working with him to start his career on a strong foundation.”

Scaffo joined the Guard in 2017, deploying twice with the 1st Battalion, 114th Infantry Regiment; once to Qatar in 2019, as part of Operation Spartan Shield, and to Syria in 2024, as part of Operation Inherent Resolve, earning the Combat Infantry Badge and Army Commendation Medal with “C” device.

Scaffo has a bachelor’s degree in political science from Rowan University in New Jersey.

A native of Franklinville, N.J., he currently resides in Washington, D.C., moving here last year prior to his fellowship.
