Senior Writer/Editor

Reports To: Director of Communications
FLSA Status: Exempt
Salary Range: $75,000-85,000/year

POSITION SUMMARY 

Responsible for conceiving, assigning, researching, writing, and editing news and feature articles of interest to an audience of National Guard officers for NATIONAL GUARD magazine and the NGAUS website. Serves as managing editor of Washington Report, the association’s weekly e-newsletter. Contributes to other Communications Department initiatives as needed. Responsible for ghostwriting columns and op-ed for NGAUS senior leaders. Supervises/mentors’ association staff writer. Edits a wide range of written materials for the entire NGAUS staff by performing the following duties.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Works with director of communications and production manager on overall editorial look and content of NATIONAL GUARD magazine.
  2. Serves as the magazine’s news editor and primary copy editor.
  3. Serves as managing editor of Washington Report, the association’s weekly e-newsletter.
  4. Establishes and maintains contacts on Capitol Hill, at the National Guard Bureau, and within Guard units and headquarters nationwide, and stays current with military news and trends to develop story ideas.
  5. Conceives and assigns stories to and supervises staff writer.
  6. Researches, covers events, and conducts field and phone interviews with subjects for articles.
  7. Writes news and feature articles for the magazine, e-newsletter, and the website.
  8. Ghostwrites and helps market columns and op-eds for NGAUS senior leaders.
  9. Assists with final editing and proofreading.
  10. Assists with other directorate and staff initiatives as needed.
  11. Works with other departmental staff to conceive of a personal professional development strategy.
  12. Stays current with communications trends and technologies and attends association media and publishing seminars as well as other communication workshops and training.
  13. Preforms other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each duty satisfactorily. 

Language Ability

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the public.

Computer Skills

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft Outlook.

Education/Experience

Bachelor's degree (B.A./B.S.) from four-year College or university; and ten years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Familiarity with the military.
