On July 15, senior leaders from NGAUS and the New Hampshire National Guard presented Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, D-N.H., with the Harry S. Truman Award, the association’s highest honor.
A true friend of the Guard, Shaheen has spent years listening to Guardsmen, understanding the challenges they face, and turning that support into action. As co-chair of the Senate National Guard and Reserve Caucus and a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, she has been a steady and trusted advocate for the Guard in New Hampshire and across the nation.
The presentation in her Capitol Hill office was attended by retired Maj. Gen. Francis M. McGinn, the NGAUS president; Jon Eisberg, the NGAUS vice president for government affairs; Col. Tony Gagnon, the executive director of the National Guard Association of New Hampshire; Maj. Gen. David Mikolaities, the adjutant general of New Hampshire; and retired Col. Steve Greco, the NGANH president.
“The Harry S. Truman Award is our association’s highest honor,” said retired Army Maj. Gen. Francis M. McGinn, the NGAUS president. “It is reserved for individuals who have made sustained contributions of exceptional and far-reaching magnitude to the defense and security of the United States in a manner worthy of recognition at the national level. Senator Jeanne Shaheen is that kind of patriot.”
Greco, a member of the NGAUS board, wrote in nominating Shaheen that her “career stands as a testament to her commitment to safeguarding the citizens of the United States of America and supporting the men and women of the National Guard.”
Shaheen is a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee and a co-chair of the Senate National Guard Caucus. She also was governor of New Hampshire from 1997 to 2003.
“My work on behalf of the National Guard has been a point of pride in both my Senate and gubernatorial careers, so I’m very honored to be recognized today by the National Guard Association,” said Shaheen.
“My gratitude goes out to all the men and women who risk their lives every day in defense of our nation, particularly the New Hampshire Air National Guard’s 157th Air Refueling Wing who deployed in support of Operation Epic Fury and the brave soldiers from New Hampshire’s own Charlie Company, 172nd Mountain Infantry Regiment, who deployed last month in support of Operation Spartan Shield.”
