The White House will unveil the framework of its proposed $1.5 trillion fiscal 2027 defense budget request to Congress on Friday, according to multiple published reports.
The amount is unprecedented. The fiscal 2026 defense appropriations act President Donald Trump signed in February totaled $838.7 billion. There was also more than $150 billion for defense in the so-called One Big Beautiful Bill the president signed last summer.
It is not yet clear whether the $1.5 trillion will be in the base budget or will also include money from a new reconciliation bill or a supplemental request.
But only an overview will be released Friday. The planned budgets for each of the military services and other key spending details will be released on April 21, according to a U.S. defense official who spoke to Bloomberg Government.
The details will be included in Budget Justification Books, or J-Books for short, from budget directors for the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and the Missile Defense Agency.
The release of the president’s budget is late this year. Officials blame the government shutdown, delays to the final 2026 defense budget and additional supplemental requests for the delay.
