The Department of War has designated the National All-Domain Warfighting Center in Northern Michigan as a national range for deep uncrewed aerial systems training.

The NADWC encompasses the nearly 200,000 acres of the Camp Grayling Joint Maneuver Training Center, the National Guard’s largest training facility, and more than 17,000 square miles of special-use military airspace at the adjacent Alpena Combat Readiness Training Center.

The sprawling facility already hosts Northern Strike, a major National Guard Bureau-sponsored joint reserve component readiness exercise. Held annually (with summer and winter iterations), it gathers thousands of personnel from across the United States and international partners to train in combined arms, live-fire, and cyber operations.

“Today’s designation of the NADWC as a national test site shows that Michigan can lead the future of aerospace and continues to play a key role in protecting our national defense,” said Gov. Gretchen Whitmer in a recent press release.

“This designation is about staying focused on the warfighter and doing what’s best for the force,” said Army Maj. Gen. Paul Rogers, the adjutant general of Michigan and the NGAUS chairman of the board.

“The NADWC gives us the scale, airspace and all-domain environment we need to amplify our ability to train and prepare for the next fight,” he added. “That kind of training directly translates to readiness and ensures our forces are positioned to succeed on the future battlefield.

The Michigan congressional delegation also applauded the announcement.

“Drones play an integral role in modern-day warfare, and the National All-Domain Warfighting Center in Northern Michigan is an ideal training ground to test these technologies and help ensure we maintain our air superiority around the world,” said Sen. Gary Peters, D-Mich., in a statement.

Col. Lucas Lanczy, the garrison commander of Camp Grayling, said the designation means the NADWC’s is gaining a reputation as a world-class military training center.

“We’re no longer the best-kept secret in the Army National Guard or the Department of War,” said Col. Lucas Lanczy, the garrison commander of Camp Grayling, in a published report. “It’s going to benefit the team as a whole.”
