Proposal Statement
Accelerate upgrade of all National Guard Blackhawk and Apache helicopters with the improved EDECU (Electronic Digital Engine Control Unit) at a rate of 100 helicopters (2 EDECUs per helicopter) per year.
Recommendation Information
An appeal to the Congress of the United States to provide funding to support the upgrade of the UH-60 L, M and all AH-64, GE-701 thru-703 engines with the improved EDECU Electronic Digital Engine Control Unit . Present, low production rates for Regular Army do not allow for quantities required for National Guard helicopters.
The EDECU is configured as a common engine control for all Blackhawk, Seahawk and Apache Helicopters. This control replaces over 10 presently used controls for various National Guard Blackhawk and Apache helicopter models with the one common control. The EDECU is configured with modern electronics which allows for a more reliable, safer and less costly alternative to the present controls as well as allowing for maximum, high altitude engine power capability for the AH-64 (e.g.,Afghanistan needs). Logistics savings and efficiency are obvious from use of one common control for all applications.
The control is configured with the same “footprint” as is in the over 20 existing models it is replacing fleet wide (including Seahawks and Foreign). This allows for direct replacement on the engine. Once installed the control recognizes the type of aircraft and provides for maximum engine performance in response to Pilot commands.
The EDECU also provides:
+ Improved reliability and safety
+ Enhanced software for low cycle fatigue engine health monitoring.
+ Expanded memory for fault detection, event recording and enhanced diagnostics.
+ Serial data bus features for future expansion for cockpit display/control.
