Col. Eric Leckel (Ret.)

Chief of Staff

A retired Army National Guard colonel who has served on the NGAUS board and as president of his state association is now the association’s chief of staff. 

Retired Col. Eric J. Leckel will oversee the association staff in Washington, D.C. and take on the role of conference coordinator.

Leckel spent more than 36 years in the Wisconsin Army Guard, most of it full time.

He retired in 2023 as commander of the 157th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade. The position took him to Africa, where he was chief of staff of the Combined Joint Task Force-Horn of Africa from October 2022 to August 2023. 

During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021, he was the Wisconsin Guard’s director of domestic operations.

Leckel was on the NGAUS board as the Army company grade representative in 2005 and 2006. He returned to the board as the Area V Army rep from 2008 to 2011 and from 2015 to 2017. 

In addition he served on the Wisconsin National Guard Association board from 2001 to 2022, including six years as president.

Leckel holds a bachelor’s degree in accounting from the University of Minnesota Duluth, a master’s degree in management from the College of St. Scholastica in Duluth and a master’s in strategic studies from the U.S. Army War College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania.
