Air Force Air Defense Capabilities AFSC and Techniques, Tactics, and Procedures development.
Recommendation Information
The rapidly evolving threat landscape, characterized by the proliferation of low-cost unmanned aerial systems, loitering munitions, and sophisticated cruise missiles, demands a dedicated Air Force Specialty Code (AFSC) for Point Defense. Crucially, this capability is no longer just a forward-deployed requirement; U.S.-based installations are no longer a sanctuary from peer and near-peer homeland threats, making robust in-garrison point defense just as critical as overseas operations. Establishing a specialized career field ensures that personnel are not merely part-time operators of defensive systems, but dedicated experts permanently trained to defend vital assets both at home and abroad. This specialized force is essential to navigate the complex command and control relationships, legal frameworks, and engagement authorities required to operate defensive systems within domestic airspace as well as contested foreign theaters.

Complementing this dedicated career field is the absolute necessity to systematically develop, learn, and rapidly share Tactics, Techniques, and Procedures (TTPs) across the enterprise. Point defense requires seamless integration with broader joint air defense networks, civil aviation authorities, and interagency partners, presenting vastly different operational challenges when defending an overseas forward operating site versus an in-garrison domestic installation. Standardized and continuously updated TTPs provide commanders with a validated playbook to deconflict crowded airspace, establish clear rules of engagement, and rapidly deploy counter-measures without risking friendly fire or violating domestic legal constraints. By institutionalizing a culture of shared tactical knowledge, the Air Force can ensure that lessons learned from both domestic security incidents and overseas combat zones are immediately codified, ensuring a resilient and agile defensive posture globally.
