Proposal Statement
Army National Guard Air Defense Battalions modernize to DIVAD and add in a C-UAS Btry per DIVAD BN concurrently with Active Component growth.
Recommendation Information
Modernizing Army National Guard (ARNG) Air Defense Battalions to Division Artillery (DIVAD) units, coupled with adding a Counter-Unmanned Aircraft Systems (C-UAS) Battery, is critical to addressing the explosive proliferation of drone threats. This,, combined with Active Component (AC) growth, ensures a standardized, multi-domain capable force. By organic integration of C-UAS batteries, these units provide vital, immediate defensive capabilities to brigade combat teams against low-altitude UAS and indirect fire. Modernizing the ARNG alongside the Active Component (AC) to a unified DIVAD structure ensures seamless Multi-Domain Operations (MDO), allowing the National Guard to field a "multi-domain ready force" by 2035. DIVAD battalions serve in a critical role, supporting maneuver divisions directly, providing them with necessary defense, especially in challenging environments. This expanded Air Defense capacity would allow the Army to enhance its overall air defense structure by 30%, providing critical, specialized expertise that covers more areas without overloading existing Active Duty units.
