Background: Environmental corrosion costs the U.S. military $23 billion annually and accounts for up to 16% of equipment unavailability. Combat vehicles, rotary-wing aircraft, and air defense systems deployed in coastal and high-humidity environments are particularly vulnerable. Current procurement practices fail to adequately fund preventive environmental protection, resulting in premature degradation, extended downtime, and accelerated obsolescence.
