Proposal Statement
5th Generation Fighter Wing's long haul and Over-the-Horizon communications procurement.
Recommendation Information
As Agile Combat Employment (ACE) continues to be the future of inter/intra-theater operational survivability and employment model of airpower, fighter squadrons, and more specifically, 5th generation fighter squadrons require the ability to not only communicate over extremely long ranges, they must also be able to pass significant quantities of data. Due to the infrastructure required for sustained F-35 operations, the requirement exists for portable, and redundant, communications methods capable of long-haul, over the air, links with the capability to send large data packages. This requirement will enable the F-35 to sustain long term and long range combat operations with the ability to react to changes in enemy force posture, as well as transitioning multiple Areas of Responsibility (AORs) with the lethality and survivability required against modern peer and near peer adversaries. ANG F-35s require aircraft portable communication kits to integrate on aircraft for combat employment. Unless pre-positioned communications equipment is available, F-35A formations that arrive at potentially austere locations have zero capability to communicate with hub locations to prepare for subsequent missions, upload and download data for mission planning, and contribute data to central hubs for rapid reprogramming support. Required hardware must fit in current aircraft storage compartments, be capable of Beyond Line-of-Sight (BLOS) uplink and downlink of voice and data communications and have solar charging capability or significant battery life. Aircraft-integrated BLOS capability would also support the satisfaction of these requirements. This resolution is a 2024 WEPTAC Critical Capability and is supported by the CAF Task Force and F-35 Weapons Systems Council.
