The current Army towed artillery fleet (M777s and M119s) lack the speed and mobility to maneuver with supported ground forces and maintain the required protection and survivability to effectively provide lethal fires in Large Scale Combat Operations (LSCO)/Multi-Domain Operation (MDO). Without a modernized howitzer capability, the Light and Medium formations will lack the capability and the means to engage, maneuver, and shape future battles with surface-to-surface fires. Army Futures Command is conducting the Tactical Fires Study to produce a recommended list of required organic indirect fire capabilities and capacities to support LSCO at Division and below levels which will inform the modernization pathway forward for fires capabilities at the tactical level.
