States have utilized a novel health security warning system to support training of the National Guard, to enhance mission readiness in the rapidly evolving emergency global pandemic response. Key observations acquired through this warning system was used to inform the creation of the first comprehensive hospital surveillance system one month ahead of the federal system. In the context of health security crises involving a novel pathogen, hospitals who are the front line of response until 1) public health has been able to assess the situation and consolidate well-informed guidance, 2) ensure access to accurate testing, and 3) a specific pharmaceutical countermeasure is available. Access to warnings produced from this system beginning Jan. 2020 played a key and effective role in prompting early preparedness and response for hospitals as well as mission support to the National Guard.
