Proposal Statement
Procure and fund capability to improve the safety and efficiency of airdrop operations.
Recommendation Information
The BSA is a mandatory and critical piece of airdrop equipment. It supplies safety restraint for both crew and aircraft. The BSA provides 3 Gs of forward restraint for 16 fully loaded A-22 containers rigged to a maximum weight of 37,248 pounds for a Container Delivery System (CDS) C-130 airdrop. US Army and US Air Force tests* of the Type V BSA with chain mount (PN: C98-2100-4 NSN: 1670-01-623-3591) have validated its ability to provide adequate forward restraint for CDS loads. The currently fielded Type II BSA has been in service for more than 30 years; however, it is no longer supportable. The lack of BSA availability has potential to impact the C-130 current capability to maintain mass CDS airdrop in the Area of Responsibility.
