The US Army's current Aviation Ground Power Unit (AGPU) has been the Army solution for decades. Originally fielded to support the fleet of aircraft developed in the 1980s (the Blackhawk and the Apache), these units have become unreliable, difficult to maintain, and adversely affect unit readiness, as these are reportable items for combat readiness. The US Army recognizes the need for replacement of the legacy AGPU. Budget submissions by the Army in FY 2022 included resourcing to develop and procure a replacement, but delays in down-selection of a solution have still not yet yielded production.
The next generation AGPU must be significantly more effective, efficient, deployable and sustainable. Program objectives for this support system aim to provide electrical, hydraulic and pneumatic services to an aircraft to support maintenance tasks in lieu of operating aircraft engines and subsystems. AGPU 1.1 with minor modifications, is a commercially available unit. The AGPU 1.1 is a self-contained unit capable of being transported by organic unit transportation. It can be lifted by forklift and helicopter sling load capability, and internal transport in the CH-47.

Under the current program of record DA has limited procurement to support CH-47 and AH-64 Operations across all COMPOs, but excludes resourcing to the Army’s largest fleet, the UH-60.
Recommendation is for increased emphasis on the need for the requirement to be fully resourced. Recommended prioritization to source units supporting mobilization requirements. Fully fund the development of the next-generation Aviation Ground Power Unit (AGPU) and ensure fielding of this capability to all US Army National Guard Aviation Units.
