Rotary aircraft flights into Degraded Visual Environments (DVE) such as rain, fog, snow, dust and extremely dark nights have been a historical threat to the mission effectiveness and safety of flight crews. Helmet mounted display technology equipped pilots can instantly see where each other is looking via line of sight (LOS) symbology. Heads up display technology improves situational awareness and communication by reducing verbal descriptions of points of interest and threats. Helmet mounted display technologies provides intuitive landing grid symbology for brownout and whiteout operations. It has proved effective in DVE conditions like dust and snow. This technology has been tested by AMRDEC and installed on a number of TN ARNG UH60L aircraft. This capability option is a current Army Program of Record.
