Proposal Statement
Support the funding for procurement of specialized maintenance tools for rotary, fixed wing, and ground vehicle platforms for Army National Guard Maintenance Facilities.
Recommendation Information
Problem: Current Army maintenance procedures for the removal of specialty materials such as gaskets, gap fillers and sealants (ProSeal) require the use of improvised or inadequate tools resulting in potential damage to substrates, composite materials, underlying primer, topcoat paint or stealth coatings, as well as creating Foreign Object Debris (FOD). Improper tools increase risk of personal injury.
Solution: Specialized maintenance tools obviate the need to improvise methods to remove gasket materials, gap fillers and sealants and mitigates the risk of FOD and personal injury. Scraper blades are made of glass-infused thermoplastics, allowing utilization of heat guns often required to soften materials, and will not damage coatings, primer or underlying aluminum, steel, plastics, composites, glass, and other delicate surfaces. Ergonomic handles reduce the physical stress of repetitive tasks, and pneumatic tools reduce labor time and increase productivity and efficiencies. Reducing or eliminating collateral damage translates to cost avoidance and cost savings resulting in faster return of aircraft and ground vehicles to mission readiness.
