Proposal Statement
Procurement and funding for handheld Link 16 Radio
Recommendation Information
1. Background. Special Tactics Squadrons (STS) consist of Combat Controllers (CCT), Para-rescue (PJ), Special Operations Weather Teams (SOWT), and Tactical Air Control Parties (TACP) who engage the enemy at close range while coordinating precision air and indirect fire on targets from two hundred meters to three thousand meters distant. Based on Operation ENDURING FREEDOM (OEF) lessons learned, the next-generation Hand-held Link 16 radio will enhance fratricide prevention and target acquisition capability with minimal additional weight penalty. The Hand-held Link 16 radio provides the war-fighter increased situational awareness and the ability to broadcast friendly position via PPLI via current Link 16 messages, contact Link 16 platforms via Voice and provide targeting information to currently fielded Link 16 platforms, using Digitally Assisted Close Air Support (DACAS). The solution will integrate with existing battlefield airman situational awareness tablets in inventory and utilizes existing communications architecture to receive and transmit critical targeting information.
2. Source of Need. Lessons learned from Operation ENDURING FREEDOM and INHERENT RESOLVE.
