Proposal Statement
Enact law to allow members of the Guard and Reserve who have reached 20 years of service to pay into the Survivors Benefit plan before they reach age 60.
Recommendation Information
When an active duty member retires from service and starts receiving pay thirty days later they immediately start paying the fee into the survivor benefit plan and their 360 payments roughly end around age seventy-two to seventy five. The change to this Survivor Benefit Plan payment schedule does not take into consideration that Guard/Reserve retirement pay doesn’t start until age 60 and therefore most will never reach the 360 payments and will always be paying into the plan. Whereas the active member in his retirement years will receive a six percent increase in pay once his/her payments reach the 360 payments currently set.
