Proposal Statement
Provide a capability that supports identification and engagement of targets at unknown distances and scenarios, while providing realistic and reactive threat representations.
Recommendation Information
Current live fire training range solutions present predictable threat representations, with either stationary targets or targets that are limited to linear movement and operate at a constant velocity-presenting only 2D target representations. Newly developed technology makes marksmanship training and skills training more realistic and engaging—even fun. Due to a US ARMY PEO-STRI (Program Executive Office for Simulation, Training & Instrumentation) Motivating Technology Gap initiative, the landscape has changed.

PEO-STRI desired the ability to create action-reaction based scenario behaviors while utilizing the training space in asymmetric manners—without having to prepare the terrain. The result was the design of trackless moving target platforms providing operation on existing unimproved terrain—being capable of behaviors based on doctrine, skills and readiness levels. This provides enhanced realism and feedback for the trainee. Used for both ground and aerial engagements, with years of soldier usage and feedback at Ft. Johnson (JRTC) and Ft. Bragg, this proven Capability Solution is aligned with Army Marksmanship needs and requirements. Known as Trackless Moving Targets, they are now a Program of Record—currently awarded for fielding to 9 Active Component installations to be executed throughout FY2026 —NSN 6910-01-686-7823 Target Moving

RECOMMENDATION: Fund fielding a capability of the trackless moving targets to National Guard Installations--that incorporate action-reaction based scenario behaviors--while utilizing the training space in asymmetric manners. This increases lethality, readiness, and survivability on the battlefield for the Warfighters.
