Streamlined authorization for use of Unmanned Aerial Platforms for use during Disaster Response Operations.
Recommendation Information
The National Guard has several Unmanned Aerial Systems available within their MTOEs to utilize for Disaster Response operations, such as Search and Rescue, levee patrol/monitoring, flood mapping, wildfire mapping, and tornado damage surveys. However, due to the restriction of only 2 offices within DOD being able to authorize use, the approval process creates a delay that reduces the timely impact of a response or does not allow for a correct response to be formulated. Recommend and Request legislation authorizing use of certain UAS for domestic operations during natural disasters.
