Rotary aircraft flights into Degraded Visual Environments (DVE) such as rain, fog, snow, dust and extremely dark nights have been a historical threat to the mission effectiveness and safety of flight crews. Helmet mounted display technology allows pilots to continually maintain line of sight (LOS) to flight objectives, but also provides improved situational awareness via symbology to maintain hazard and terrain avoidance and improve crew coordination.

Heads up display technology improves situational awareness and communication by reducing verbal descriptions of points of interest and threats. Helmet mounted display technologies provide intuitive landing grid symbology for brownout and whiteout operations. It has proved effective in DVE conditions like dust and snow. This technology has been undergoing limited field testing by the Program Management Officer (PMO) and is being evaluated for Army wide fielding as a Program of Record. NGAUS is supportive of any efforts to ensure concurrent and proportional fielding of these technologies into ARNG aircraft as a pathway to both modernize and ensure improved aircrew safety and situational awareness.
