Since 2007 the public service Loan Forgiveness program has allowed student loan borrowers to have their student loan balances forgiven after making 120 qualifying payments on a direct federal loan under a repayment plan while working full time for a public service employer such as a government or public entity or a non profit organization. The program benefits veterans who continue to serve through government agencies such as the Veterans Administration and the Department of as well as Veteran
Service Organizations. Recent failed legislative efforts would have eliminated the program and will likely reappear in future congressional to the detriment of our veteran population.
