The Army will be significantly challenged to meet the demands of a global, protracted, high intensity conflict as it is currently being fought in eastern Ukraine and potentially in other theaters that are considered contested environments. Currently, Compo 2 meets the expected artillery platform capability that initially achieves parity with adversaries and, in theory, subsequent overmatch to provide divisions deep-shaping fires in support of the Division. However, the Army does not currently have enough organic artillery platforms at the Compo 2 Battalion echelon that can range out to 70+ KM to keep pace with Army needs supporting Multi-Domain Operations, thus additional extended range artillery capabilities are needed to continue to ensure parity and overmatch. Providing this capability with additional Compo 2 battalions will provide increased capability and lethality to fires brigades in the Army National Guard within a LSCO environment.
