Tactical datalink gateway functionality would allow the KC-135 to bridge multiple, currently independent enclaves of data, usually stove-piped in specific individual weapons systems. The ability for the KC-135 to be the conduit between Link-16, Situational Awareness Data Link (SADL), Tactical Targeting Network Technology (TTNT), Multifunction Advanced Data Link (MADL), Commercial and Military Satellite Communications and others would give both participants at the forward edge of the battlespace and command elements further back, a complete picture of the Joint Operational Area. Combined with a cross domain guard, it would allow relevant information to be shared at the appropriate classification level for the participant being U.S. or coalition partner. There are currently multiple defense contractors with viable solutions to this capability gap assessed by both the SECAF and the AMC commander.
