Space National Guard as Primary Combat Reserve within U.S. Space Force

Air National Guard

The Issue

The Air National Guard currently comprises over 10% of Space Force manpower. The creation of the Space Force in the fiscal year 2020 National Defense Authorization Act failed to establish a Space National Guard as the primary combat reserve of the Space Force. This orphaned space professionals and operational missions that exist in the Air Guard, disconnecting them from their parent service and making their future unclear and undefined.

Recommendation

  • Support S. 3697 and H.R. 3048, the Space National Guard Establishment Act, to create the Space National Guard as the primary combat reserve component of the Space Force.
  • Resource the National Guard to support current and emerging space warfighting requirements.

Take Action

Immediately contact your senators and House representatives and ask them to support S. 3697 sponsored by Sen. Laphonza Butler, D-Calif., and Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., and H.R. 3048 sponsored by Rep. Jason Crow, D-Colo., and Rep. Doug Lamborn, R-Colo.
